Press Release: Shy Blakeman Releases “Downtown Women” on August 10
August 1, 2003, Longview, TX: Texas Country Rock and Blues Artist,
Shy Blakeman teams up with Gary P. Nunn, Rusty
Wier and Miranda
Lambert in his debut CD release: “Downtown
Women”. Blending old school
honky-tonk, southern rock and blues and delivering it to the new generation of
cross-genre music fans, the CD delivers a wallop to fans on August 10.
Backed by the Whiskey Fever Band, a band established by the artist’s father in 1979, Shy Blakeman masters a blend of sounds and emotions. Gary P. Nunn contributes to the CD with an ode to one of their common weaknesses in the title track, “Downtown Women”, almost a sure bet to become a honky-tonk sing-along song in the spirit of anthems “You Never Even Called Me By My Name” (David Allen Coe) and “Family Tradition” (Hank Williams Jr.)
Rusty Wier collaborates with Blakeman in the song “Thick and the Thin”, a song about devotion through good and bad times. In a perfect blend of Texas Legends and rising new country artists, Blakeman is joined by newly signed Sony Nashville artist Miranda Lambert in “Crying in Your Sleep”. If the name sounds familiar, it should. Ms. Lambert just placed third to Buddy Jewell in USA Network’s Nashville Star television show. “With friends like these, how can I go wrong?” smirks the artist, Blakeman, in his semi-cocky, outlaw-attitude way of showing his appreciation for his fellow artists.
Blakeman’s CD is being released with a bang also, with a live radio-feed concert from Love and War in Texas in Plano, TX. Love and War has become a hotbed of Texas artists lately, having been the stomping ground for the aforementioned Lambert over the past few years. In addition, the venue is using Blakeman’s CD Release Party on August 10 as a testing ground for creating its own “Live at Love and War” series of CDs, following the footsteps of the successful “Live at Billy Bob’s” series.

Texas Country Rock and Blues Artist,
Shy Blakeman teamed up with Gary P. Nunn, Rusty

Lambert in
his debut CD release: “Downtown Women”.
Blending old school honky-tonk with blues and delivering it to the new
generation of cross-genre music fans, the CD, released August 10, 2003, has
already made an impact on the industry.
Backed by the Whiskey Fever Band, a band established by the artist’s father,
Mike Blakeman, in 1979, Shy Blakeman masters a blend of sounds and emotions. Gary
P. Nunn contributes to the CD, in an ode to one of their common weaknesses,
in the title track, “Downtown Women”. The song is almost a sure bet to
become a honky-tonk sing-along song in the spirit of anthems “You Never Even
Called Me By My Name” (David Allen Coe)
and “Family Tradition” (Hank

Rusty
Wier collaborates with Blakeman in the song
“Thick and the Thin”, a song about devotion through good and bad times. In a
perfect blend of Texas Legends and rising new country artists, Blakeman is
joined by newly signed Sony Nashville
artist Miranda Lambert in
“Crying in Your Sleep”. ”With friends like these, how can I go wrong?”
Blakeman states, showing his gratitude to his fellow artists and giving the
public an insight into his semi-cocky, outlaw-attitude.
Blakeman’s CD was being released
with a bang through a live radio-feed concert from Love
and War in Texas in Plano, TX. Love
and War has become a hotbed of Texas artists lately, having been the stomping
ground for the aforementioned Miranda Lambert over the past few years.
Since the release, his music has been winning fans over throughout the
south, winning “Battle of the New Music” honors in towns such as Oklahoma
City, OK and Beaumont, TX. XM Radio, the national radio satellite broadcasting
company, has even joined the ranks in played the artist’s music.
Born in Laramie, Wyoming, to Mike and
Deanna Blakeman in July 1980, Shy currently
makes his home in Kilgore, TX, a stone’s throw from Longview, in east Texas.
Blakeman’s mélange of musical
influences reflect the new generation of artists, who were raised with a larger
scope of musical exposure due to increased avenues and media coverage. Among his
most influential artists are Willie
Nelson, Hank Williams Sr. and Jr.,
Bob Marley, Guns and Roses, and legendary blues artists B.B. King, and Bugs
Henderson. It was the words of Bugs Henderson that helped mold Blakeman’s
style when Henderson told him, “The best thing your can do to further your
music is to listen to every kind of music you can get your hands on.”
Shy has already had the opportunity to play with or open for several prominent country artists such as: Gary P. Nunn, Rusty Wier, Miranda Lambert, Deryl Dodd, Jason Boland and the Stragglers and Travis Howard.
As most musicians do, Shy has had
stints with several bands prior to this venture. His first appearance was at The
Door in Deep Ellum (Dallas, TX) and he has worked with quirky-named bands such
as Mr. Whitefolks, I-20, The G.A.T.I.s, Reluctant-131, and The Southern Roots
Revival Band.
Blakeman’s current band, The Whiskey Fever Band (WFB), began in 1979, giving him not only an
established follow, but a heritage in follow his father’s footsteps. During
the CD Release Party, WFB members Jeremy Eppes (bass), Josh Webb (drums) and
Clayton Jones (guitar) could be seen jamming along with Blakeman to the delight
of the “Shiner Sunday” crowd at Love & War in Texas (Plano). During one
song, Blakeman was joined by his father in what was deemed a good ole-fashioned
passing of the baton. The title song, “Downtown Women” was also quite a
moment when model BrookeW (www.brookeW.com),
began dancing on stage with the band. BrookeW is one of the local rising models
who has not only been seen in a recent issue of Stuff Magazine, but is also the
model who adores Blakeman’s debut CD.
